The best iris lighting needs two small lights, in exactly that position, but because the iris is reflective, they appear in every photo — sometimes right on top of what you want to examine.

Questions
Do I need new hardware?
For IrisMapper v6 Standard = No. Two of the v6 Advanced features — "Reflection Removal" and "3D Impression" — require burst mode photos from the IrisExplorer v5.1. Everything else works on the photos you already take. Using the IrisExplorer v5.1 is highly recommended.
What's included in v6 Standard?
Left and right eye views, every chart overlay with its colour adapted to your client's iris, the image adjustments including exposure, save, and the report — one photo at a time. Reflection Removal, the 3D impression, Strip and the AI analysis are Advanced only.
Should I wait for an IrisExplorer v6?
No new IrisExplorer (v5.2 or 6) is planned. (I'm not sure what I would do to improve it.) The IrisMapper v6 Advanced is the upgrade — it's software.
My photos aren't great. Will it still help?
IrisMapper v6 won't change a poor iris photo into a good one, so it's important to try and get a better series of images if you can. The bonus training included will cover aspects of taking better images. Some of the editing tools can improve the image a little.
Does the analysis tell me what's wrong with someone?
No. It suggests clues worth exploring with your client, never conclusions, and it's clearly marked beta. There is no automated diagnosis in IrisMapper — and there never will be.
